How to use this page

Duration is not the only thing that matters. A shorter totality that you can actually reach, with a bed nearby and a clear sky, beats a longer one you spend the morning stuck in traffic trying to get to. Read the duration alongside the access notes, then check your exact spot on the interactive map.

Spain and Gibraltar

Totality in Spain runs from about 10:45 to 10:53 in the morning, with the sun 37 to 42 degrees above the horizon. The path covers the far south: the Cádiz coast, the Strait, the western Costa del Sol, the Granada coast, part of Almería province, plus Ceuta and Melilla.

Places that miss out

Seville, Granada, Almería city, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Antequera in Spain. Fez, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakesh in Morocco. Algiers and Constantine in Algeria. Sousse, Monastir and Hammamet in Tunisia. Cairo, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. Several of these are above 99% and none of them sees totality.

Choosing between them

A rough guide:

  • Least effort, from Europe: the western Costa del Sol or Cádiz. Short flights, plenty of beds, three to nearly five minutes.
  • Longest totality in Spanish territory: Ceuta, then Melilla, then Tarifa.
  • Best beach holiday that includes totality: Djerba in Tunisia, or Marsa Alam in Egypt.
  • Best setting: Luxor and Karnak, or Timgad in Algeria, or Baelo Claudia at Bolonia if you are staying in Spain.
  • Best odds of clear sky: Upper Egypt, followed by inland Algeria and Tunisia.
  • Longest totality anywhere: Nag Hammadi and Sohag in Egypt, at 6 minutes 22 to 23 seconds.
