Festivals, observations and organised viewing for 2 August 2027

The eclipse of 2 August 2027 is still some way off, and the organised programme around it is only beginning to take shape. Rather than fill this page with speculation, we list events here once they are confirmed and have a public page of their own.

What to expect, based on 2026

The eclipse that crossed Spain in August 2026 gives a good indication of what 2027 will look like. In the year before that event the following appeared, and the same categories are likely again:

  • Multi-day music festivals sited inside the path, with the programme pausing for totality. In 2026 there were at least four of these in Spain alone.
  • Astronomy society public observations, usually free, with filtered telescopes and commentary. These are often the best option for families and they tend to be announced only a few months ahead.
  • Official observation networks. For 2026 the Federation of Astronomical Associations of Spain, supported by the IAU, built a network of official nodes across the path. The same organisation has a remit covering 2026, 2027 and 2028.
  • Educational programmes, including the European Space Agency’s CESAR initiative, which ran a dedicated eclipse programme in 2026.
  • Commercial eclipse tours, run by astronomy magazines, museums and specialist operators. For 2027 these are heavily focused on Egypt, and many were selling from 2025.
  • Cruises, both Nile cruises positioned in the path in Egypt and sea cruises intercepting the shadow in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Where events are most likely

In Spain: the Cádiz coast, the Campo de Gibraltar and the western Costa del Sol are the obvious sites, because they combine long totality with existing capacity. Expect municipal events in Cádiz, Tarifa, Algeciras, Ceuta and Melilla, and commercial festivals on the open ground behind the Costa de la Luz beaches.

In Egypt: Luxor will be the centre of world attention, and access to Karnak and the Valley of the Kings on the day is likely to be ticketed and capped. Watch for announcements from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Elsewhere on the path: Tunisia has an obvious focal point in the amphitheatre at El Djem, and Algeria in the Roman city of Timgad. Both are likely to be managed sites on the day.

Two things to check before you buy a ticket

First, that the site is genuinely inside the path of totality. Check the exact location on the interactive map rather than trusting the marketing. Second, that the organiser is real and the event is licensed. Eclipses attract a certain amount of promotional optimism, and some events announced for 2026 changed venue or did not happen.

Planning an event visit

  • Book accommodation early. Events draw crowds and August is already peak season across the path.
  • Bring your own eclipse glasses. Even where an event provides them, carry certified ISO 12312-2 glasses as a backup.
  • Arrive hours early. Site access and parking will be the constraint, not the eclipse.
  • Plan for heat. The partial phases last over two hours in August sun. See safety and health.
  • Expect a slow exit. Everybody leaves within fifteen minutes of totality ending.
