Facts about the 2026 eclipse

  • The path entered Spain through Galicia and left over the Balearic Islands, with totality running from roughly 20:27 to 20:35 local time.
  • Maximum duration in Spain was about 1 minute 48 seconds, in the area of Asturias and León.
  • The sun was very low, between 2 and 12 degrees above the horizon depending on location, shortly before sunset.
  • The path was around 290 km wide across Spain. Cities such as Madrid and Salamanca fell outside it and saw only a deep partial eclipse.

How 2027 is different

The 2027 eclipse is nothing like the one in 2026. It happens mid morning instead of at sunset, with the sun high in the sky, and the path crosses the far south of the peninsula instead of the north. Totality is also much longer: between two and nearly five minutes in Spain, against under two minutes in 2026.
