Best Locations to Watch the Eclipse

Find the perfect spot in Spain for the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026

The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, will be visible across northern and central Spain. The path of totality — where the sun is completely blocked — stretches from Galicia in the northwest, across Asturias, León, Burgos, Soria, Zaragoza, and out to the Balearic Islands. The eclipse occurs in the early evening (around 20:27–20:35 local time) with the sun low on the horizon.

Not all locations below are within the path of totality. We've included some destinations just outside the path because they're popular with visitors and offer a deep partial eclipse. Each location is clearly marked.

Choosing Your Location

When selecting your viewing spot, consider these key factors:

  • Are you in the path? Only locations within the path of totality will see a total eclipse. Check our interactive map to verify.
  • Sun altitude: The sun will be between 2° and 12° above the horizon depending on location. You need an unobstructed view toward the west-northwest.
  • Weather: Central and eastern Spain (Zaragoza, Mallorca) have the best clear-sky odds. Northern coastal areas carry more cloud risk.
  • Duration: The longest totality in Spain (~1m 48s) is near the centerline around Oviedo, León, Burgos, and Palencia. Mallorca gets 1m 36s.
  • Accommodation: Book early — this event coincides with peak summer tourism.
